Principal Responsibilities
- Shunting Trains: Moving trains between different tracks to ensure they are in the correct position for loading, unloading, or maintenance.
- Coupling and Uncoupling: Connecting and disconnecting train carriages.
- Operating Signals: Using hand signals and fixed signals to communicate with other railway staff.
- Safety Checks: Conducting inspections to ensure trains are safe and ready for service.
- Communication: Coordinating with drivers, signallers, and other railway personnel to ensure smooth operations.
- Drive trains, observing all applicable speed restrictions.
- Obey all fixed and hand signals.
- Communicate effectively with Drivers, Signallers, Shunters, and Handsignallers using the phonetic alphabet.
- Handle degraded operating situations as outlined in the Rule Book, Train Operating Manuals, and other relevant publications.
- Complete written reports as required by the Rule Book and the c2c Safety Manual.
- Ensure traction, route cards, Licence/Personal Track Safety (PTS) certificate, and Safety Critical Work Identification (SCWID) cards are up-to-date and available for inspection.
- Carry all necessary publications and equipment to meet Network Rail and c2c standards.
- Adhere to the c2c Drugs and Alcohol policy
Knowledge, Experience, and Qualifications
- Must meet all entry criteria for train driving as required by c2c. This will include a series of classroom and off-site assessments, an in-person medical (including drugs & alcohol) and an interview with a Driver Manager.
- Must be located within easy commuting distance of our route, and be able to travel to our depots at either East Ham or Shoeburyness without the use of public transport for early and/or late shifts.
- Must be comfortable working in a safety critical environment and have a clean safety record.
- Commit to a 6-month training course (if successfully hired) commencing in July
- Competent in Railway Group Standard GE/RT 8000 (Modular rule book).
- Knowledge of the c2c Code of Conduct requirements.
- Holder of Personal Track Safety Card (PTS).
- Report for duty on time, (early and late shifts apply) be fully prepared to shunt and operate fringe signal boxes when required.
- Capable of retaining skills and knowledge for continuous assessment as per the c2c Safety Manual.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for presenting and writing reports.
