Southeastern has unveiled plans to give its Class 376 fleet a comprehensive refresh, enhancing the traveling experience for passengers across South East London, East Sussex, and Kent.

All 36 of the operator’s Electrostars will undergo both interior and exterior upgrades. This includes installing at-seat USB and power sockets, introducing new LED lighting, and applying a fresh blue exterior wrap. The extensive refurbishment is already underway at Southeastern’s Ashford Maintenance Centre, with the first trains—featuring the updated livery and lighting—scheduled to re-enter service this spring.

Improved Experience for Passengers

Mark Johnson, Engineering Director at Southeastern, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating that the mid-life refresh will not only deliver better journeys for customers but also help keep the Class 376 trains “in tip-top condition for years to come.” According to Johnson, the upgrades build on improvements across other Southeastern fleets and complement the introduction of newer trains. He added that plans to replace the older Networker units remain ongoing, reinforcing Southeastern’s commitment to a modern, reliable network.

Interior Upgrades and Timeline

While the initial phase of refurbishment involves exterior work and lighting enhancements, more extensive interior renovations—such as refurbished seating and a complete repaint—are set to begin in late summer. Southeastern aims to have the fully revamped trains back in service by 2026.

Partnerships Driving the Project

The project is being delivered through a collaboration with Alstom and Eversholt Rail. Peter Broadley, Commercial Director UK and Ireland at Alstom, highlighted the significance of this partnership, describing it as a mid-life upgrade that ensures the Class 376 fleet remains reliable and comfortable for Southeastern’s passengers. He emphasized Alstom’s commitment to innovation and excellence in supporting UK rail operators and improving the overall travel experience.

With work already in progress, Southeastern’s Class 376 overhaul is set to modernize the fleet and enhance journeys for passengers across the region.
