DB Cargo UK is embarking on a significant digital transformation by retrofitting nine Class 66 locomotives with the European Train Control System (ETCS), in partnership with Siemens Mobility. This initiative marks the beginning of a national programme aimed at eventually equipping the entire Class 66 fleet with this cutting-edge technology.
Part of the East Coast Digital Programme, the £1.4 billion initiative will modernise the UK’s rail network by replacing traditional signalling systems with digital cab signalling. Siemens Mobility is leading the development and integration of its Trainguard 200 onboard system, enabling train drivers to receive real-time route information directly within the cab. Once implemented, the East Coast Main Line – connecting Edinburgh and London – will operate without lineside signals, improving operational efficiency, safety, and reliability.
The retrofitting will take place at DB Cargo UK’s Toton depot in the East Midlands, with completion expected by March 2026. Alongside the upgrades, DB Cargo UK is also investing in site infrastructure improvements, including a new load bank, a modern wash facility, bridge cranes, and updated accommodation for Siemens staff working on the project.
Jon Harman, Head of Asset Management and Maintenance at DB Cargo UK, said: “This investment will secure the long-term growth of our sector. It will create much-needed capacity for freight transport while improving the safety and reliability of the rail network.”
Rob Morris of Siemens Mobility and Emily Woodward of Network Rail also praised the collaboration, describing it as a major step forward in modernising UK rail logistics.
With this project, DB Cargo UK reinforces its commitment to innovation, efficiency, and the future of sustainable rail freight in the UK.
