GB Railfreight (GBRf), a leading UK freight rail operator, has launched a new service transporting imported steel slabs for Tata Steel UK. The service runs from the Port of Bristol at Portbury to Tata Steel’s substantial steelworks in Port Talbot.
The service agreement extends until the end of 2027, coinciding with Tata Steel’s development of a new Electric Arc Furnace with a production capacity of three million tonnes per year.
To efficiently handle steel slabs weighing up to 30 tonnes each—equivalent to the weight of 15 family cars—GBRf will utilise advanced, high-performance magnetic lifting technology. These innovative magnets streamline train preparation and enhance operational efficiency by significantly reducing downtime.
Alex Kirk, Commercial Director at GB Railfreight, highlighted the company’s commitment to innovation, stating, “We continually seek opportunities to enhance productivity and deliver superior service. The advanced magnet technology is a prime example of this commitment, offering greater efficiency and reliability for our operations and customers.”
Tata Steel UK also emphasised the importance of this partnership. According to the company, reliable logistics are crucial as they transition towards environmentally sustainable steel production. Tata Steel is currently investing £1.25 billion in modernising its facilities to ensure the future of steel manufacturing in Britain.
Alex Kirk, GB Railfreight’s Commercial Director, further commented, “Collaborating closely with industry leaders like Tata Steel allows us to play a significant role in supporting the transition to sustainable steel production in the UK.”
