In an unprecedented move, Class 43 HST power car No. 43161 has been scrapped at the Plym Valley Railway in Devon, marking a rare event in the heritage railway community.
Arriving as an empty shell, the power car was slated for disposal at the heritage railway, offering a unique opportunity for preservationists. The process allowed parts to be salvaged for use in other preserved Class 43 power cars across the UK, benefiting heritage projects nationwide.
A Farewell to 43161
Before scrapping began, the Plym Valley Railway held an HST Enthusiast Day, providing the public with one last chance to view 43161. The event proved a fitting farewell, drawing enthusiasts keen to see this piece of rail history one final time.
Dismantling work commenced on Saturday, 11th January, with the power car fully scrapped by Tuesday, 14th January. Contractors and volunteers worked diligently to cut up and remove the locomotive safely and efficiently.
Heritage and Preservation Impact
Despite the somber nature of scrapping, the Plym Valley Railway emphasized the importance of the process:
“The power car arrived with us as a shell, already destined for disposal. Salvaging large components ensures many HST organisations will benefit. This unique experience has been fascinating and demonstrates how heritage railways can contribute to the preservation of other locomotives.”
The event also marked the first time a heritage railway has directly scrapped a Class 43 power car.
A Legacy That Lives On
While the scrapping of 43161 represents the end of the road for this particular power car, preserved examples of HSTs remain operational across the UK. Many can be enjoyed at heritage railways, and a select few are still active on the national network, with trials underway to equip them with modern ETCS signaling technology.
