Pathfinder Railtours, one of the UK’s best-known charter train operators, has announced it will cease operations in December 2025, bringing to an end more than five decades of main line railtouring.
The Stroud-based company, originally founded as F&W Railtours in 1973 by Tony Fielding and Peter Watts, has been a mainstay of the enthusiast charter scene, running trains to unusual destinations and over rare track, often with sought-after traction. In 1987, the business was rebranded as Pathfinder Railtours, later becoming one of the first operators to offer a full dining service on excursions.
Pathfinder’s final tour is scheduled for 20 December 2025, with details to be confirmed in due course. Subject to availability, the Diesel Traction Group’s “Western” D1015 Western Champion is expected to feature. Two further tours – in November to the South West, Shrewsbury and Chester – remain on sale and will be among the last outings under the Pathfinder banner.
Over the years, Pathfinder has built a reputation for unusual itineraries and memorable traction choices, from steam over rare freight routes to diesel-hydraulic “Western” forays deep into Scotland, reaching Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh. The company also raised more than £500,000 for charity through on-train raffles.
Business founder Peter Watts reflected:
“When five years is a long time in the rail industry, to have achieved more than 50 years of continued operation is truly remarkable. I am incredibly privileged to have been part of this, and proud of our team and volunteer stewards who have delivered our programme. My sincere thanks to our loyal passengers who have supported us, enjoyed our excursions, and hopefully travelled to many places they may not otherwise have visited.”
Chief Executive and owner Barry Cordell, who has been with Pathfinder for nearly 30 years, added:
“We have achieved so much, but I now feel it is the right time to step back and retire. I would like to thank our team, volunteers and passengers for their loyalty, and also the train operators and industry colleagues who have supported us over the years. The company is solvent and will be wound down in an orderly fashion, leaving no outstanding debts.”
Pathfinder has emphasised that it remains fully operational until its final trains have run.
The news marks the end of an era for the UK charter market, with Pathfinder having become a familiar name on the national network. Its closure follows more than 50 years of operations, countless memorable excursions, and a loyal following among enthusiasts.
