A Northern Class 195 has been named in honour of Rob Burrow, the Leeds Rhinos star and tireless campaigner for motor neurone disease (MND) awareness, who passed away in June 2024 aged 41.
The train was unveiled at Castleford station on what would have been Burrow’s birthday, in a ceremony attended by his wife Lindsey, children Maya and Jackson, and parents Geoff and Irene. The exterior artwork spans two carriages and features an image of Rob in international rugby action, while the interior includes a timeline celebrating his achievements on and off the pitch.
Northern worked with Burrow’s family and the MND Association to design the tribute, which aims to keep his legacy alive and raise awareness of the disease that affects more than 5,000 people in the UK at any time.
Lindsey Burrow said: “Rob was not only an extraordinary rugby league player, but a devoted husband, father and inspiration to so many. By dedicating a train in his memory, this carries forward his legacy and reminds everyone of the power of determination, love and community.”
Northern’s managing director Tricia Williams added: “Hopefully everyone who sees this train will take a moment to think about Rob’s legacy and join the fight against MND, by making a donation to improve care and fund research into a cure.”
During his 16-year career with Leeds Rhinos, Burrow won eight Super League Grand Finals, three World Club Challenges, and two Challenge Cups. In his later years, alongside close friend and team-mate Kevin Sinfield, he helped raise millions of pounds for MND research and patient care.
The train naming was requested by Northern employees, Wakefield Council and West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin, following a high-profile local campaign.
Tanya Curry, chief executive of the MND Association, called the tribute “a wonderful way to remember Rob’s sporting achievements as well as the huge amount he did to support the MND community.”
Northern has also partnered with the MND Association, with staff fundraising efforts and a £15,000 donation from rolling stock owner Eversholt Rail supporting research and care.
With the Class 195 now carrying Rob Burrow’s name across the Northern network, his legacy will continue to inspire rail passengers across the region for years to come.
