Hull Trains, in collaboration with Alzheimer’s Society, has marked Dementia Action Week 2025 by hosting a unique onboard event designed specifically for individuals living with dementia. The initiative highlights the rail operator’s commitment to accessible travel and community engagement.
The event saw five guests living with dementia experience a memorable return journey to Doncaster. During their trip, they enjoyed live 1960s music performed by Hull-based singer Phil Richards, whose rendition of familiar songs, such as ‘Brown Eyed Girl’, was specifically chosen to trigger nostalgic memories.
In addition to the musical entertainment, Hull Trains organised a bespoke railway-themed crossword puzzle, carefully designed to provide gentle cognitive stimulation. These thoughtful touches aimed to create an enjoyable yet beneficial experience for the passengers, supporting both their mental well-being and social engagement.
Louise Mendham, Service Delivery Director at Hull Trains, emphasised the company’s dedication to inclusive travel: “We’re passionate about ensuring that rail travel is accessible for all. Events like this will hopefully inspire others to experience our relaxing and inclusive environment. Witnessing our guests engaged and connecting through music and activities was incredibly rewarding. We’re proud to raise awareness and support such an important cause.”
Julie Ibbertson from Alzheimer’s Society, who accompanied the group, praised the initiative for its meaningful impact: “Each activity was enjoyable and carefully designed to encourage memory recall, which is essential for those affected by dementia. For some participants, this was their first train journey in decades, making it especially significant. We’re grateful to Hull Trains for creating this thoughtful experience, which will remain cherished by our members and their families.”
Alzheimer’s Society remains the UK’s leading dementia charity, offering critical support and advocating for early diagnosis. With one in three people living with dementia currently undiagnosed, Dementia Action Week plays a crucial role in raising public awareness and reducing stigma surrounding the condition.
Hull Trains’ ongoing commitment to inclusivity has previously been recognised through several industry accolades, including the Spotlight Rail Award, celebrating their efforts in equality, diversity, and community-focused initiatives.
