TransPennine Express (TPE) has been named “Employer of the Year” at this year’s Women in Rail Awards, cementing its position as one of the UK rail sector’s leading advocates for workplace inclusion.
The ceremony, hosted by broadcaster Gail Porter at Camden’s historic Roundhouse on 15 May, welcomed several hundred senior figures from across the industry. The independent judging panel highlighted TPE’s commitment to structured, measurable programmes that support the recruitment, retention and progression of women at every level of the business.
A central factor in the award decision was the rapid growth of the Women at TPE network. Launched less than two years ago, the forum now connects more than 150 members—from frontline drivers and conductors to engineering, planning and executive roles—offering mentoring opportunities, peer support and access to tailored development workshops.
Complementing the network, TPE’s week-long internal “Week of Inclusion” campaign earlier this year addressed subjects ranging from maternity return-to-work pathways to neurodiversity. Interactive sessions featured role models from across the organisation and encouraged line managers to embed best practice within day-to-day operations.
The operator also celebrated the success of Lucy Lightbown, who received the Women in Rail Female Apprentice of the Year award. During TPE’s inaugural two-year sustainability apprenticeship, Lightbown delivered projects that reduced traction energy consumption, promoted modal shift from private car to rail, and shaped the company’s decarbonisation road-map.
Commenting on the accolade, Nicola Buckley, People Director at TransPennine Express, said:
“We’re absolutely delighted to be named ‘Employer of the Year’. It’s a testament to the dedication of colleagues who drive progress every day. Inclusion is central to how we operate and grow, and we’re committed to fostering an environment where women can thrive.”
Buckley also praised Lightbown’s achievement, noting her “passion, commitment and eagerness to learn” throughout the apprenticeship programme.
