Liverpool Lime Street station has formally recognised its contribution to the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest with the installation of a commemorative plaque in the station’s public museum. The plaque, designed by a member of the station team, recalls the moment when Eurovision enthusiasts arrived by rail to a welcome that included drummers, dancers and local performers.
Phil James, Network Rail’s North West Route Director, said: “The plaque commemorates a significant moment in the city’s history, one that united art, culture and solidarity. The railway industry played a crucial part in welcoming visitors from all over the world to Liverpool, and this plaque ensures we can preserve and cherish that memory for years to come.”
Councillor Harry Doyle, Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture, added: “It’s great to be able to come together to unveil the plaque to celebrate Liverpool hosting Eurovision on behalf of Ukraine in 2023. Visitors entered the city via Lime Street station and experienced everything the city has to offer. It was a great collaboration, and this plaque is a testament to that.”
The stainless-steel tablet is displayed within Lime Street’s ‘mini museum’, which houses a collection of railway artefacts charting the station’s 187-year history. Its unveiling coincides with the build-up to Eurovision 2025, reminding passengers of Liverpool’s recent role as a host city and underlining the importance of rail connectivity to major cultural events.
