Northern Trains has begun rolling out new bicycle-storage facilities at seven stations in Lancashire, Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire after a network-wide review identified aging or under-used provision. The improvements combine free open bike racks with secure short-term lockers and long-term rental units, giving regular cyclists a choice of parking options that match both commuting and leisure needs.
Investment Scope and Locations
The upgraded facilities are being installed at:
- Carnforth (Lancashire)
- Cheadle Hulme, Hazel Grove, Lostock Parkway and Romiley (Greater Manchester)
- Guiseley and Kirkstall Forge (West Yorkshire)
Northern’s commercial and customer director, Alex Hornby, said the programme “is great news for customers who bike to the station” and reflects the operator’s objective to encourage multi-modal travel and reduce car dependence for first- and last-mile access.
Cycling Strategy and Partnerships
The storage upgrade accompanies Northern’s 2024 publication of recommended rail-to-trail cycle routes and its partnership with route-planning platform Komoot, promoting scenic rides in Northumberland and the Peak District. By combining infrastructure improvements with journey-planning resources, Northern aims to increase ridership among passengers who value active travel connections.
