ASLEF members working on the London Underground have voted decisively in favour of a four-day working week, following a proposal put forward during the 2024 pay talks.
The proposal, which includes a 34-hour working week and a paid meal break, would give train drivers an extra day off each week, effectively reducing their working time by 4½ hours.
In an independently audited referendum, 70% of members voted in favour of the deal, on a turnout of 80%.
ASLEF’s full-time organiser on London Underground, Finn Brennan, said:
“Despite a campaign of disinformation and distortion by those who want to prevent drivers having improved working conditions and a better work life balance, our members have voted in favour of the proposal.
As a majority of members have voted in favour, we will now be writing to the company to inform them of the result and to arrange a meeting to start detailed discussions on implementation.”
The move is seen as a significant step forward in work-life balance for Tube drivers and is likely to be watched closely by other transport operators and trade unions across the country.
