Avanti West Coast has joined forces with Mencap Liverpool and Sefton in a pioneering partnership aimed at promoting independent and inclusive travel for people with learning disabilities.
The initiative, called On The Right Track, was funded through Avanti’s Customer and Community Improvement Fund and sought to identify and break down the barriers faced by those who want to travel more independently by rail.
The project found that 91% of adults with learning disabilities who struggle to leave home want to feel more confident travelling. To address this, Mencap members with lived experience were involved in designing inclusive travel resources and training, helping to ensure the guidance was practical and accessible.
A key part of the programme included a supported journey from Liverpool to Crewe, giving participants real-life experience of navigating the rail network. The journey not only marked a milestone for many involved but also provided vital insights to help shape the travel advice produced by the project.
The group’s work culminated in a special showcase event held in Liverpool on Friday 28 March, where they were each presented with a Certificate of Achievement by Avanti’s Customer Experience Director, Kathryn O’Brien, in recognition of their contributions.
Joanna Buckley, Community Manager at Avanti West Coast, said:
“We all have a responsibility to make public transport more inclusive for all.
On the Right Track is a great example of how our Customer and Community Improvement Fund is making a real difference—by working together with the community to remove barriers and build confidence for those who need extra support.”
Nadine Jones, Progression Leader at Mencap Liverpool and Sefton, added:
“Travelling shouldn’t be a barrier. That’s why hearing and learning from the real-life experiences of people with learning disabilities is so important.
Our co-designed training uses those experiences to shape a more understanding and inclusive future—and we’re so grateful to Avanti West Coast for helping make it possible.”
The findings and resources developed through On The Right Track will now be used to promote best practices in accessibility, ensuring the rail network is more welcoming and navigable for everyone.
