Network Rail has announced that essential engineering work will take place at Mirfield station over the Easter weekend as part of the multi-billion-pound Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), bringing the station closer to its transformation into a fully modernised facility.
From Saturday 19 April to Monday 21 April, trains will not operate between Huddersfield and Dewsbury, with significant service alterations across the Transpennine route. Passengers are advised to check before they travel, as diversionary routes and rail replacement bus services will be in place throughout the Easter weekend.
Station and Road Closures
Due to the scale of the works at Mirfield, Station Road will be closed throughout the Easter weekend. Passengers should be aware that this will result in a longer walking route to and from the rail replacement bus stops on Huddersfield Road. While pedestrian access to the station will remain in place while trains are running, customers are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance.
Additionally, Saturday night closures of Station Road are now in effect in the lead-up to the Easter works. Local access to Lidl and the Navigation Tavern will be maintained throughout.
Upgrades at Mirfield Station
The work taking place will see the construction of a new platform and station entrance concourse. These improvements are part of a larger scheme to upgrade the station and surrounding infrastructure to allow an increase in tracks from three to four, unlocking capacity for more services in the future.
Planned improvements include:
- Step-free access via a new footbridge with lifts.
- A new station building and concourse on Station Road.
- Upgraded blue badge parking and cycle storage.
- Modernised facilities designed to support faster, more frequent, and more reliable services.
The works at Mirfield form a key element of the broader TRU project, which will transform the line between Manchester and York with:
- 70 miles of full route electrification.
- Digital signalling installation.
- Track doubling between Huddersfield and Westtown.
- Infrastructure enhancements at multiple stations.
- Resilience improvements to diversionary routes.
Progress on the Transpennine Route Upgrade
The TRU project is not only focused on rail upgrades but also has strong regional economic and environmental benefits. Key statistics include:
- £7.3bn in approved funding to date.
- 80% of the workforce employed from within a 40-mile radius.
- Over 350 apprentices now working on the programme.
- A commitment to 10% biodiversity net gain along the route.
Statement from Network Rail
Andrew Campbell, Sponsor for TRU, said:
“We’re aware that disruption isn’t ideal, so we would like to thank the people of Mirfield and beyond for their understanding as we continue our progress in delivering major upgrades to the station.
“By the end of 2025, Mirfield station will have modernised facilities with faster, more frequent trains able to stop there in the future, meaning improved journeys across the North.
“Please plan any journeys ahead of time, as both the station and Station Road will be closed. Engineering work elsewhere on the route will also impact services across the Pennines.”
