Avanti West Coast and one of its employees have been recognised for outstanding contributions to social inclusion at The Breaking Down Barriers Awards 2025, held at the House of Commons.
Dr Theresa Robberts, Social Value and Accessibility Manager at Avanti West Coast, received a Special Recognition Award for her work promoting diversity, opportunity and accessibility along the West Coast Main Line. She was commended for her leadership in launching the operator’s Social Value Report in December 2024 and for her continued work to eliminate barriers to access across the network.
The awards, organised by The Purpose Coalition, celebrate individuals and organisations working to improve social mobility and break down systemic inequalities in communities across the UK.
Reflecting on the award, Dr Robberts said:
“I feel exceptionally proud. It means a lot to work with a great team and be a part of Avanti West Coast because we believe in connecting people to opportunities. That means breaking down barriers that may stop us from doing so.”
Drawing on her own lived experience, Dr Robberts added:
“I know what it’s like to have independence returned to you—it builds confidence and can be life-changing. We want people to be confident that rail is a fully accessible, inclusive mode of travel.”
Avanti West Coast also took home the award in the Infrastructure for Opportunity category, which recognises organisations that enhance physical and digital infrastructure to connect communities and reduce geographical inequality.
The operator was praised for its inclusive approach to new rolling stock and station design. Its newly launched Evero trains feature enhanced accessibility, including improved wheelchair spaces, accessible toilets, and braille and large-print signage. The company also partnered with GoodMaps to trial a new wayfinding tool, enabling visually impaired passengers to navigate stations independently.
Andy Mellors, Managing Director of Avanti West Coast, said:
“We’re incredibly proud of Theresa’s achievement and the wider team’s efforts to make our network more inclusive. Investing in our communities and services can make a lasting difference to the people and places we serve.”
“Rail should be for everyone, and we’re committed to ensuring independent, confident travel is a reality for all passengers. This recognition reinforces the importance of our mission.”
Avanti West Coast has pledged to deliver £1 billion in social value by 2031 through a range of community, sustainability and inclusion initiatives.
