A dazzling drone display featuring an LNER Azuma train flying across the night sky has helped launch S&DR200, a landmark international festival marking 200 years since the birth of the modern railway.
The ‘All Change’ opening show, staged at the renowned Kynren site in Bishop Auckland, welcomed over 5,000 spectators to witness a breathtaking celebration of railway heritage, powered by cutting-edge technology and community spirit.
LNER Supports the Bicentenary of the Stockton & Darlington Railway
The spectacular show brought to life the historic journey of Britain’s railway, beginning with Locomotion No. 1 – the first steam locomotive to haul passengers on a public railway back in 1825. A replica of this pioneering locomotive dramatically crossed the stage, accompanied by stunning projection mapping, original musical compositions, and live performances from Teesside’s 80-strong community choir, Infant Hercules.
But the standout moment came when 400 synchronised drones took to the air, creating luminous imagery of iconic railway symbols – including a miner’s lamp, a railway porter, the historic Locomotion No. 1, and a modern-day LNER Azuma – connecting the past and future of rail travel.
The finale saw the drones form the S&DR200 logo, with Auckland Castle beautifully illuminated in the background.
A Historic Tribute and a Vision for the Future
Ed Turner, Senior Public Affairs Manager at LNER, said:
“With the launch of S&DR200, we were thrilled to celebrate the transformative power of railways and their role in shaping our society.
We’re proud to support the S&DR200 programme throughout 2025. The event at Kynren was an unforgettable journey through time – honouring the railway’s legacy while looking forward to the future of sustainable rail travel.”
A Nine-Month Celebration Across the North East
Festival Director Niccy Hallifax added:
“Our S&DR200 opening event was a remarkable collaboration between imitating the dog, SKYMAGIC, and the 11Arches mass choreography team, led by Rocky and Katie. This spectacular performance was a love letter to the region, capturing the creativity and resilience of County Durham and Tees Valley.
We’re deeply grateful to LNER, whose support was instrumental in making this incredible show a reality.”
