Passengers travelling through Great Missenden station are now greeted by a brand-new Roald Dahl-themed mural, unveiled today (Friday 28 March) in a vibrant celebration of local creativity, literary heritage, and community spirit.
The striking large-scale mural is the result of a collaborative project between The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre, The Misbourne School, and professional mural artist Sólveig Magnúsdóttir, with support and funding from Chiltern Railways’ Community Investment Fund.
Unveiled at a special event this morning, the artwork now brightens up the station platform with a whimsical display inspired by Roald Dahl’s iconic stories, as well as the countryside and character of Great Missenden, the author’s longtime home.
Students Help Shape Railway Mural Inspired by Dahl’s Storytelling
Over several months, sixth-form students from The Misbourne were involved in every step of the creative process — from interviewing and selecting the artist, to engaging in design workshops and shaping the final composition.
Drawing from Dahl’s imaginative storytelling and the unique character of the local area, the students contributed ideas that blend famous characters, Missenden landmarks, and personal visual motifs, creating a mural that’s as much about local identity as it is literary legacy.
Emma Bedlow, Project Manager at The Roald Dahl Museum, said:
“It’s been a pleasure to work with The Misbourne students and Sólveig. The final mural is a testament to their creativity and enthusiasm. We hope it serves as an inspiring welcome — and farewell — for everyone passing through Great Missenden.”
Bringing Joy to Daily Commuters and Literary Tourists
Zach Bailey, Regional Growth Manager at Chiltern Railways, commented:
“We’re proud to support this unique partnership with the Roald Dahl Museum and The Misbourne School. The mural brings a warm, creative touch to Great Missenden station — brightening the day for our regular passengers and the many visitors who come to explore Roald Dahl’s world in the Chilterns.”
Sólveig Magnúsdóttir, the Icelandic-born artist behind the mural, added:
“It was such a joy to explore Dahl’s imaginative worlds with the students and project team. What we’ve created is a joyful mishmash of creatures, colours, and ideas — designed to bring smiles and spark curiosity.”
A Lasting Landmark for Great Missenden
Located on the Chiltern Main Line, Great Missenden station is the gateway to one of Buckinghamshire’s most beloved literary destinations. The mural now stands as a colourful landmark for both residents and tourists alike, combining railway heritage, community pride, and cultural storytelling.
The project not only enhances the visual environment of the station but also aimed to build real-world skills and creative confidence among young people — in line with the wider goals of Chiltern Railways’ commitment to community development.
