Network Rail has announced a major £11.5 million infrastructure upgrade to the Far North Line, set to take place this June, to improve the long-term reliability of services for communities across the Highlands.
The project will see the refurbishment of 5 miles of track between Brora and Helmsdale, along with the replacement of nearly 9 miles of track between Invergordon and Fearn.
To safely complete the works, the line will close north of Dingwall from Sunday 8 June to Monday 30 June, with no trains running beyond Dingwall during this period.
Ross Moran, Route Director at Network Rail Scotland, said:
“Some components on the track are approaching 100 years old, so it’s really important this project goes ahead as we continue to build a railway fit for the future. We appreciate passengers’ patience as we deliver this vital work.”
ScotRail will operate as many services as possible between Inverness and Dingwall, with rail replacement buses covering the rest of the route. Customers are encouraged to check their journey in advance.
Mark Ilderton, ScotRail’s Service Delivery Director, added:
“We know how important the Far North Line is to the communities it serves. While the work means temporary disruption, it’s a vital investment in the future of the route.”
Additionally, Dalchalm level crossing will be closed temporarily, with a diversion route via the A9 in place for road users.
Passengers planning to travel between Inverness/Dingwall and Wick/Thurso from 8 to 30 June should consult ScotRail or National Rail Enquiries for the latest travel information.
