TransPennine Express (TPE) has enhanced accessibility at Manchester Airport station by upgrading screens to help British Sign Language (BSL) users quickly identify the next train to Manchester Piccadilly.
The update now includes BSL-supported information about the next service to Manchester Piccadilly, the most popular onward destination from the airport. Data from the Office of Rail and Road shows that more than a quarter (27%) of journeys from the station are to this central hub.
TPE introduced BSL-enabled digital screens across its network in 2022 to make essential service information more accessible without relying on audio announcements or written displays alone. According to the 2021 census, BSL is the main language for more than 22,000 people in the UK.
Andrew McClements, Customer Experience & Transformation Director at TPE, said: “We are constantly looking for ways to improve accessibility for our customers and we hope this small change will create an easier journey for BSL users travelling through Manchester.”
This latest improvement is part of TPE’s wider commitment to inclusivity. Last year, the operator trialled an innovative onboard announcement system that provides real-time transcription of conductors’ announcements on train screens, helping customers with hearing impairments or those using headphones to stay informed.
TPE is also investing in improved onboard facilities, including new seating and enhanced toilet provisions such as stoma-friendly accessible toilets across the network.
