To celebrate 200 years of railway history, Network Rail is offering exclusive walking tours of three of London’s most iconic stations: London Waterloo, London Victoria, and London Bridge. Led by renowned railway historian Rachel Kolsky, each tour explores the remarkable heritage and transformation of these key transport hubs.
London Waterloo, opened in 1848 and terminus of the Wessex route, boasts a rich and varied past. The tour delves into its seven stations history, including the ghostly ‘Station of the Dead’, and its roles in both World Wars. Visitors will also learn about the Festival of Britain, cinematic connections, and the old international terminal once used by Eurostar.
Gerry Kitchener, Head of Managed Stations for Wessex Route, said: “This tour offers a compelling journey through 177 years of change at Waterloo, a station that was once the first impression of Britain for many European visitors.”
London Victoria, originally two separate stations for rival companies, merged in the 1920s and became the departure point for glamorous European journeys via the Night Ferry and the Orient Express. This tour reveals tales of wartime resilience, literary connections, and its pivotal role in the early days of air travel.
London Bridge, part of the city’s earliest railway line, has undergone major redevelopment. The tour explores its transition from a neglected terminus to a modern, open concourse with Victorian charm and contemporary design, offering views of the City and the Thames.

These guided tours are part of Railway 200, a nationwide celebration inspired by the 1825 opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. The initiative commemorates Britain’s pioneering railway legacy and its enduring impact today.
