Have you ever wondered how train drivers maintain their concentration behind the controls? We spoke with Chantel Chang, who operates trains on the Mildmay and Suffragette lines, about her career journey and the critical skills required to safely and effectively manage a train.
Why does your job require intense concentration?
“Driving a train is a safety-critical job. High levels of concentration are essential to ensure the safety and efficiency of services. During busy periods or unexpected disruptions, I must handle multiple tasks simultaneously, prioritising them quickly and accurately. During quieter times, maintaining alertness can be challenging, but our training equips us with strategies to stay engaged.”
What happens if concentration slips?
“Lapses in attention can have serious consequences, potentially harming passengers or damaging railway infrastructure. The responsibility of these risks motivates me to stay vigilant and committed to performing my duties to the highest standard.”
Has focusing always come naturally to you?
“Yes, I’ve generally been good at focusing, particularly during academic tasks such as exams or coursework. However, train driving demands continuous shifts in focus throughout a shift, a skill I’ve developed and refined significantly since my academic years.”
What tips can you give to enhance concentration?
“Improving focus starts with lifestyle and habits. Here’s what helps me personally:
- Maintain a balanced diet and engage regularly in physical activities.
- Practice mindfulness or meditation, away from distractions.
- Engage in brain-training exercises regularly.
At work, simple practices also make a big difference:
- Arriving early to mentally prepare for my shift.
- Clearly separating personal issues from professional duties.
- Staying hydrated throughout the shift.
- Keeping my workspace tidy and well-ventilated.”
