Network Rail has introduced a new email alert system to notify residents near railway lines of upcoming disruptive work, aiming to enhance communication and reduce inconvenience.
Approximately two million people across the West Midlands and surrounding regions who live within 500 metres of railway tracks can now receive timely email notifications about maintenance activities that may cause disturbances, particularly during overnight hours or planned closures.
The service, accessible via Network Rail’s website, is part of a broader initiative to improve community engagement, reduce environmental impact by minimising paper use, and lower postal costs. Previously, notifications were primarily delivered via traditional mail.
Jon Crampton, Network Rail Central’s Head of Communications, highlighted the benefits: “Switching to email alerts allows us to communicate more effectively and sustainably with our neighbours. I encourage everyone living close to railway lines to register for these updates and stay informed about essential works in their area.”
Interested residents can sign up for the free service and manage their notification preferences at www.networkrail.co.uk/railworknearme. Further details and information about living near railway infrastructure can be found at www.networkrail.co.uk/communities/living-by-the-railway.
