To mark International Women’s Day, London North Eastern Railway (LNER) is actively promoting opportunities for women to become train drivers.
With recruitment campaigns underway at two key depots, five female train drivers have shared insights into their roles in a short promotional film. These women describe their experiences controlling the advanced 430-tonne Azuma trains, capable of reaching speeds up to 125 mph along the UK’s historic rail routes.
LNER has established itself as a leader in gender diversity, notably increasing female participation in driver training programmes from 21% to 33% over the past two years. Ashleigh Carroll-Dickson, who manages driver recruitment, highlighted ongoing stereotypes about train driving as a male-dominated profession. She said, “At LNER, we’ve challenged that perception successfully, with 71 female drivers now operating our Azuma fleet, and we are keen to encourage even more women to apply. Our drivers’ genuine passion is incredibly inspiring.”
Steffi Gillies, a former driver who now oversees driver training at LNER, emphasised the importance of support for women drivers to achieve their career potential. “Supporting our female drivers has clear benefits, and I take pride in being part of an organisation dedicated to empowering women in the railway industry,” Gillies said.
Featured in the film are drivers Jess, Alex, and Emma from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and Rezwana and Bianca from London King’s Cross. Each shares their personal motivations and experiences, highlighting what makes their careers fulfilling.
Emma from Newcastle, an experienced driver of eight years, expressed, “The job is incomparable. Every time I approach an Azuma train, I feel a thrill knowing this is my workspace. The views are incredible, and it’s rewarding to safely transport passengers to their important events and journeys.”
Rezwana, based at King’s Cross, added, “When people discover I drive trains, their reaction is always enthusiastic. I strongly encourage women, particularly from diverse backgrounds, to consider applying. LNER supports you every step of the way. Driving trains is enjoyable and rarely feels like work because I genuinely love it.
